In Illinois, the circuit court is the court of original jurisdiction. There are 24 judicial circuits in the state, of which six are single county circuits (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will). The circuit court shares jurisdiction with the Supreme Court to hear cases relating to revenue, mandamus, prohibition, and habeas corpus.

The courts are exempt from the disclosure requirements of the Freedom of Information Act. However, all records in court cases that are not required by law or court order to be kept confidential are public records kept by the clerk of the court and available upon request from the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Each digit represents unique information about the case. The first two digits indicate the year the lawsuit was filed, while the third digit is used to designate the case type.
